Sodium hydroxide solution tank construction in Hungary – precision in tank erection

As part of a new industrial tank installation project, we introduced and implemented an advanced installation method for OLP-TECH Manufacturing, Assembly and Service Ltd. focusing on enhancing efficiency and optimizing the construction process. Our client previously utilized the “top-to-bottom” tank erection method but was looking for a more efficient and optimized tank assembly process.
Nordweld proposed an innovative electromechanical tank jacking system, which enables fast and precise assembly of steel storage tanks, significantly reducing construction time and minimizing the number of workers required on-site. The key factors behind choosing this solution were the need to lower transportation costs and optimize on-site work by introducing vertical plate Bending Machine and Plate Track.
Technical specifications of the sodium hydroxide solution tank
- Location: Kazincbarcika, Hungary
- Tank Type: Stainless steel storage tank for sodium hydroxide solution
- Diameter: 16 m
- Height: 17 m
- Weight: 120 t
- Capacity: 3,000 m³
- Material: Stainless steel 1.4404
Implementation of the advanced tank lifting system
To meet the high standards set by our client, we applied a modern tank lifting system, which included:
- 16 x 15-ton electromechanical jacks for tank lifting
- 16 x wheel trolleys entire tank rolls on the top of wheels”
- 1 x weld gap adjusting jack, adjust the weld gap during sheet feeding from the bending machine
- 5 x tank rotators, guaranteeing precise tank rotation adjusted to the speed of the welding process,
- Tack Weld Stand, the horizontal joints are aligned as the tank rotates continuously,
- Internal Scaffolding system, create working platforms inside the tank ,
- Vertical Plate Bending Machine, allowing for on-site straight plates rolling,
- 15-meter plate track, used in conjunction with a vertical Bending Machine, placed flat material onto the plate track and welds the vertical seams. .
The tank erection of electromechanical jacks ensured stability and precision during assembly, eliminating structural misalignment and improving ergonomic conditions within the confined space of the chemical plant.
Challenges in tank erection and their solutions
- Tank structure leveling
At the start of the erection process, deviations due to uneven ground were identified. We conducted detailed adjustments and re-leveling the wheel trolley according to the position of the bending machine, ensuring the tank structure was positioned precisely correspondingly to the project specifications. - Limited space on-site
The tank was assembled within a large chemical complex, where space constraints were a major challenge. To address this, we utilized a plate track system, which enabled direct feeding of 13-meter steel sheets into the bending machine, significantly reducing material preparation time and logistics costs. - Advanced welding technology
Due to the strict welding requirements for stainless steel, we recommended to use TipTig welding technology provided by TipTig Company, which improved weld quality, increased efficiency, and minimized thermal distortion.
Tank construction progress – next steps in tank erection
The assembly of the upper sections, roof, and access system has been completed. In the coming weeks, the remaining tank components will be installed. Tank jacking equipment will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring safety and precision throughout the final stages of construction.
With Nordweld’s technology, you can shorten project execution time, reduce the number of workers required, and optimize tank assembly logistics.
