Construction of 2 biogas tanks near Bologna Italy using the Nordweld system. See how tank rotation and material feeding from one location improved tank erection in conditions of very limited access.

Construction of 2 biogas tanks in Italy under limited-access conditions

In one of recent projects in Italy ECOACCIAIO Srl used the Nordweld system for the construction of two biogas tanks. In this project the main challenge was not only the size of the tanks but above all the very limited access to the work area. The system delivered by Nordweld made it possible to organize the tank erection process more efficiently reduce material handling and carry out key operations from one location.

Project overview – construction of 2 biogas tanks in Italy

The project involved the construction of two biogas tanks located in Italy. The tanks have a diameter of 24 m and a height of 17 m. The structure was designed using two materials: the roof and the first course were made of stainless steel 304 while the shell and bottom plates were made of carbon steel 273.

Project details:

Client: ECOACCIAIO Srl
Project number: 26012/01/02
Location: Italy
Number of tanks: 2
Diameter: 24 m
Height: 17 m
Roof and first course: stainless steel 304
Shell and bottom plates: carbon steel 273

The main challenge: limited access to the erection area

The key project challenge was the very limited access to the working space around the tanks. With structures of this size such conditions directly affect construction logistics the sequence of operations the way material is fed and the organization of erection crews.

Under standard conditions a large number of operations require frequent material movement and the reorganization of workstations. In this project it was therefore crucial to apply a solution that would simplify the erection process as much as possible and reduce the impact of site constraints on project progress.

How the Nordweld system improved the tank erection process

The project used a Nordweld system that enables the entire tank to rotate during the construction process. As a result sheet feeding could be carried out from one location which significantly simplified the organization of the entire process.

This approach delivered several important benefits:

  • better use of the limited working space
  • fewer logistics operations around the tank
  • a more structured sequence of erection stages
  • reduced interference with other nearby works.

In addition the ECOACCIAIO Srl used rotation and positioning welding equipment including rotating fixtures turntables and a mobile welding station. This solution made it possible to accelerate construction perform in-place circumferential welding and improve access and ergonomics.

Roof construction under difficult erection conditions

Roof construction was a particularly demanding stage of the project. With very limited access to the tank a conventional approach to roof assembly could have significantly affected the schedule and increased the complexity of the entire execution process.

In this project a rotation system for the shoring tower was used which made it possible to carry out roof works in a more efficient way and better adapt the erection process to the actual site conditions. As a result one of the most demanding stages of the project could be optimized without unnecessarily complicating site logistics.

Result: better process organization and smoother execution

In this project the most important result of using the Nordweld system was not just the improvement of a single technical parameter but the better organization of the entire tank erection process under difficult erection conditions.

The applied solution made it possible to:

  • shorten project execution time
  • reduce disruptions on site
  • improve erection workflow
  • facilitate work on large tank sections
  • increase safety and ergonomics during welding operations
  • improve weld quality thanks to stable rotating welding conditions
  • reduce alignment challenges related to large-diameter cylindrical sections.

As a result the tank erection process progressed in a more predictable way and was better adapted to the real limitations of the construction site.

Tank building systems for limited-access conditions

Not every project offers comfortable access to the erection area. In projects where working space is limited the right tank building system has a direct impact on project pace safety and execution quality.

Nordweld solutions help make tank construction more efficient even in difficult erection conditions especially where it is crucial to reduce logistics around the tank and carry out the work from one location.
