Sweden 2025
Nordweld delivered the Advanced System with Wheel Trolley for the construction of 2 industrial tanks in stainless steel LDX 2101 in Sweden. The project required a well-organized erection process combining the top-down method, tank rotation, and material processing from both coil and flat sheets.
Technical parameters of the tanks
Project: 2 stainless steel tanks
Capacity: 10,300 m³ each
Diameter: 25.6 m
Height: 20 m
Weight: 220 t per tank
Material: stainless steel LDX 2101
Shell thickness: 6–10 mm from coil
Shell thickness: 11–15.5 mm from flat sheets
Total production hours: 9,600 hours for 2 tanks
Productivity rate: 22 man-hours per tonne
The project scope included the construction of 2 tanks with a diameter of 25.6 m and a height of 20 m. Both tanks were made of stainless steel LDX 2101. Depending on the required shell thickness, the material was processed from both coil and flat sheets.
Combining coil and flat sheet processing in one erection process
One of the key aspects of the project was the combination of two material preparation methods within one tank construction process. For shell sections with a thickness of 6–10 mm, the material was processed directly from coil using the Vertical Bending Machine and Decoiler. For thicker shell sections, from 11 to 15.5 mm, Plate Track and a station for the vertical assembly and welding of sheet metal plates were used.
This solution made it possible to adapt the material preparation method to the technical requirements of the tank shell while maintaining continuity in the assembly and welding of successive shell sections.
Top-down construction, tank rotation and mechanized welding
The project used a configuration including Lift Jacks 100-00 15T, Wheel Trolleys, Tank Rotators, Vertical Bending Machine, Decoiler, Plate Track, and automated Arc Tig welding stations for horizontal joints. The tank construction process was carried out using the top-down method, while tank rotation made it possible to perform key assembly and welding operations at ground level.
As a result, it was possible to maintain an organized workflow, achieve better control over the welding process, and efficiently carry out successive erection stages, including roof assembly using the rotation system for the shoring tower.
This project confirms that the Nordweld system effectively supports the construction of large stainless steel tanks where process control, repeatability, and flexible adaptation of the erection method to the tank parameters are essential.
